Celebrity chef and author Yudhika Sujanani is best-known for her designer heels and signature curry dishes, but this “Curry Queen of Bling’s” repertoire extends further than Indian cuisine. 2011 is set to be an action packed year for this Joburg-based personality, with a new book and the launch of an online TV show. Yudhika plans to release her third recipe book later this year, which promises a spicy twist.

“Curry Me Home, the first book, was not only a dream come true, but an experiment”, she says, “Curry Me Home again, was the second recipe book project and something that I loved doing.” Her ‘Curry Me Home’ complementary range of spices provides the foundation for many of her dishes.

2011 will see the launch of Yudhika’s online TV show. Together with some of Johannesburg’s celebrities and much- loved personalities she will be showcasing her recipes and sharing a few giggles. “I know that the show is going to be a lot of fun and even though it is daunting to be on camera, I am going to be mixing work and pleasure with this one!” she says with a daring laugh. The show will be centered on how-to’s, tips and recipes from her books, not to mention some friendly banter with celebrity guests.

When Yudhika was growing up, all the important bits of life “went down in the kitchen”. She spent much of her adolescence in hotel kitchens thanks to her mum’s career as a professional chef. In grade seven she landed her first job as an assistant in the Chantecler Hotel kitchen in Durban. It was these experiences that informed the way she ran her restaurant Salaam Bombay, a runaway success.

Yudhika will no doubt be thrilling audiences once again in 2011, whilst experimenting with new mediums and exploring new avenues. Her renewed vigor and motivation radiates through her, from her attitude to life to her love of gourmet delights.

She uses her extensive knowledge and experience to masterfully create innovative flavours and food combinations. With a passion for food and zest for life, Yudhika believes food and cooking not only nourishes the body….it also nourishes the spirit.

Simple foods prepared in a flash are her key focus. With an incredibly busy schedule she insists on home cooked meals so the meals have to be spicy but not hot, fresh, zingy and packed with loads of flavour and fresh, seasonal ingredients. Experimenting with food is her creative outlet, guaranteed to cheer her up.

After fulfilling her dream of owning her own restaurant, which was a runaway success, she turned her attention to more innovative ways of sharing and selling food. She started the highly acclaimed Curry Club, an idea born out of her love of entertaining that raised money for the Starfish Foundation at the same time.

Yudhika has authored two recipe books, ‘Curry Me Home’ and ‘Curry Me Home again’, and will be releasing a third book mid-2011. Her ‘Curry Me Home’ complementary range of spices, available in a number of SPAR retailers country-wide, provide the foundation for many of her dishes (Red Chilli Powder, Ground Cumin, Ground Coriander, Garam Masala) andare roasted and blended according to her own recipes (Magic Masala, Nan’s Lazy Day Masala, Balti Blast, Balti Sprinkle).

She lives in Fourways, Johannesburg with her three children and two Afghan puppies.

    1. HI there, Magic Masala is a blend of spices that I make – it adds lots of flavour and aroma to soups, stews, casseroles and bakes! Its a must have and you could compare it to a highly aromatic garam masala – only better!

    Thanks for your great recipes that you bring into our kitchen.
    A friend of mine invited us over to her place and she made this most divine chocolate cake and topped it up with this amazing dropping chocolate sauce over the cake and I must say this is to die for, but the sad thing about her is she refuses to disclose this recipe with anybody and she is so adamment about this,she does mention something about cream or cottage cheese that she uses to make up this chocolate sauce but refuses to give us the recipe. I’m wondering if you could help and give me a receipe for chocolate cake and most of all chocolate sauce.

    Please contact me about this urgently. I once bought your spices at a food expo with a small recipy book? Do you have any recipy books with Asian curry type recipies that will go nicely with using with the spices. Please send me pictures of what is available. Also the spices. They were in glass containers

  3. Hi, please let me know about your venue/restaurant. Is it per set menu? Do you offer Breakfast, Lunch supper, tea? Can we book cooking classes? What do you offer?

    1. Hi Theloshni, We create a menu according to our clients specifications – we do private functions at night and are open from Mon – Sat, 8am to 5pm. Cooking classes can be booked for private class or you could join an open class as well. I do post updates for the open classes on the blog.
